Incense Burner

Traditionally smudge was burned in a shell, abalone, being the favourite amongst most Native Americans.

The abalone is a beautiful shell with little holes on the side that provides good ventilation. It will resist to high temperatures without cracking. The abalone, for some tribes, is symbolic of the Great Goddess of the Pacific Ocean.

In the purification process of smudging, the four elements are represented: the match or flint represents the fire element, the herbs and ashes are the earth, the smoke represents the air and the shell symbolizes the water element.

Blue Eagle has always felt uncomfortable selling the outer skin of a living being which implies the death of that creature. Furthermore, the abalone is now a protected species in several countries.

Many nations in South America and Europe use clay burners for their smudging. We have thus created a clay burner in the form of the abalone shell which thus represents the water element because of its form and because the clay is wet when it is moulded. Following your inspiration, you can also add different elements to accentuate the symbolism of water, such as a piece of shell, wetting the exterior before lighting the herbs, etc.

We propose you a pack :
One clay burner with :
- Desert Sage
- Cedar
- Sweetgrass
- Juniper
in a lovely bag.
