What is an essential oil?

An essential oil is derived from a natural substance, usually either for its healing properties or as a perfume. Essential oil is the result of distillation or a steam-stripping process.  Essential oil is a highly volatile substance made from the secretion of plants, flowers or fruits. Such oils were called essential because they represent the very essence of odour and flavour. The oil bears the name of the plant from which it is derived; for example, rose oil or peppermint oil.
